Am I a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

While bariatric surgery helps individuals with weight loss, it is important to understand that the procedure is not for everyone. You may qualify as a candidate for the Covenant Bariatric and Metabolic Center if you:

  • Are 80 to 100 pounds over your ideal weight
  • Have a history of obesity, and non-surgical methods have failed
  • Have high-risk health problems (for example: diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure)
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 or 35-39.9 with a co-morbid condition.* (Adults 18 and over)
  • Have a BMI greater or equal to 35 or 120% of the 95th percentile for age and sex, whichever is lower (Adolescents)
  • Have a BMI greater than or equal to 40 or 140% of the 95th percentile for age and sex, whichever is lower (Adolescents)

  • Nutrition and Exercise Counseling – Monitors proper intake of foods, liquids, vitamins and lifestyle changes

  • Psychological Assessment - ensures the patient's well-being before undergoing treatment
  • Sleep Center - sleep apnea can often be alleviated with surgery
  • Surgical Consultations - surgeons conduct physical exams and evaluations prior to surgery

*Co-morbid conditions include:
Asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, deep venous thrombosis, depression, female reproductive disorders, gallbladder disease, gastroesophageal reflex, heartburn, high cholesterol, hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and joint pain, stress, urinary incontinence and Type II diabetes.
